Gloria
Afterwards, standing at the middle of the altar, extending and then joining his hands, and bowing slightly, the priest says — except during Lent, Advent and in Masses for the Dead — the Gloria. When he says the words: We adore Thee, We give Thee thanks; Jesus Christ; and Receive our prayer, he bows, and at the end he signs himself with the Sign of the Cross from forehead to breast:
Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace to men of good will. We praise Thee. We bless Thee. We adore Thee. We glorify Thee. We give Thee thanks for Thy great glory. O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son. O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father. Who takest away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Who takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Who sittest at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For Thou only are holy. Thou only art the Lord. Thou only art most high, O Jesus Christ. Together with the Holy Ghost  in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

R.
 Amen.

Collect
Then the priest kisses the altar, and turning to the people says:
V. The Lord be with you.
R. And with thy spirit.
The Collects mean the collected prayers of all the faithful assisting at the Holy Sacrifice. Raising his voice, his hands, and his sentiments to God, the priest excites the faithful to unite their prayers with his.
Let us pray.
O God, from whom Judas received the punishment of his guilt, and the thief the reward of his confession: grant unto us the full fruit of Thy clemency; that even as in His Passion, our Lord Jesus Christ gave to each a retribution according to his merits, so having taken away our old sins, He may bestow upon us the grace of His Resurrection. Who with Thee liveth and reigneth in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.
Who livest and reignest with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end.
R.
 Amen

Lectio
Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Corínthios.
1 Cor 11:20-32.
R.
 Deo grátias.

Lesson
Lesson from the first letter of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians
1 Cor 11:20-32.
Brethren, When you come therefore into one place, it is not now to eat the Lord's supper. For every one taketh before his own supper to eat. And one indeed is hungry and another is drunk. What, have you not houses to eat and to drink in? Or despise ye the church of God and put them to shame that have not? What shall I say to you? Do I praise you? In this I praise you not. For I have received of the Lord that which I also delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus, the same night in which He was betrayed, took bread, and giving thanks, broke and said: Take ye and eat: This is My Body, which shall be delivered for you. This do for the commemoration of Me. In like manner also the chalice, after He had supped, saying: This chalice is the new testament in My Blood. This do ye, as often as you shall drink, for the commemoration of Me. For as often as you shall eat this bread and drink the chalice, you shall show the death of the Lord, until He come. Therefore, whosoever shall eat this bread, or drink the chalice of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the Body and the Blood of the Lord. But let a man prove himself; and so let him eat of that bread and drink of the chalice. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily eateth and drinketh judgment to himself, not discerning the Body of the Lord. Therefore are there many infirm and weak among you: and many sleep. But if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. But whilst we are judged, we are chastised by the Lord, that we be not condemned with this world.
R.
 Thanks be to God.

Evangelium
His finitis, si est Missa sollemnis, Diaconus deponit librum Evangeliorum super medium Altaris, et Celebrans benedicit incensum, ut supra: deinde Diaconus genuflexus ante Altare, manibus iunctis, dicit:
Munda cor meum ac labia mea, omnípotens Deus, qui labia Isaíæ Prophétæ cálculo mundásti igníto: ita me tua grata miseratióne dignáre mundáre, ut sanctum Evangélium tuum digne váleam nuntiáre. Per Christum, Dóminum nostrum. Amen.
R. Laus tibi, Christe.
S. Per Evangélica dicta, deleántur nostra delícta.

Gospel
In Solemn Masses the priest blesses the incense, and the deacon, kneeling before the altar with his hands joined, says the Munda cor.
Cleanse my heart and my lips, O almighty God, who didst cleanse the lips of the prophet Isaias with a burning coal, and vouchsafe, through Thy gracious mercy, so to purify me, that I may worthily announce Thy holy Gospel. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Afterwards he takes the book from the altar, and again kneeling down before the priest, asks his blessing, saying:
D. Sir, give me thy blessing.
The priest answers:
P. The Lord be in thy heart and on thy lips, that thou mayest worthily and in a becoming manner, proclaim His holy Gospel.
In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Then, turning back to towards the book, with his hands joined, the priest -- at Solemn Masses the deacon -- says:
P. The Lord be with you.
S. And with thy spirit.

R.
Glory be to Thee, O Lord.
Joann 13:1-15
Before the festival-day of the Pasch, Jesus knowing that His hour was come, that He should pass out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world. He loved them unto the end. And when supper was done - the devil having now put into the heart of Judas, the son of Simon the Iscariot, to betray Him, - knowing that the Father had given Him all things into His hands and that He came from God and goeth to God: He riseth from supper and layeth aside His garments and, having taken a towel, girded Himself. After that, He putteth water into a basin and began to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel wherewith He was girded. He cometh therefore to Simon Peter. And Peter saith to Him: Lord, dost Thou wash my feet? Jesus answered and said to him: What I do, thou knowest not now: but thou shalt know hereafter. Peter saith to Him: Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him: If I wash thee not, thou shalt have no part with Me. Simon Peter saith to Him: Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head. Jesus saith to him: He that is washed needeth not but to wash his feet, but is clean wholly. And you are clean, but not all. For He knew who he was that would betray Him; therefore He said: You are not all clean. Then after He had washed their feet and taken His garments, being set down again, He said to them: Know you what I have done to you? You call Me Master and Lord. And you say well; for so I am. If then I being your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that as I have done to you, so you do also.
R. Praise be to Thee, O Christ.
S. By the words of the Gospel may our sins be blotted out.

Washing of the feet
The washing of the feet takes place after the homily, though it may be done at some other time to-day. The celebrant girds himself with a cloth, and assisted by his ministers, begins the washing of the feet of twelve men chosen for the ceremony. While the subdeacon holds the right foot of each of those whose feet are to be washed, the celebrant, kneeling before him, washes the foot and wipes it, the deacon handing him a towel for the wiping. Meanwhile the following chants are sung:

After the Maundy, the officiating priest washes his hands. Then returning to the place whence he came he puts on maniple and chasuble and standing with his head uncovered, he says:

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation: But deliver us from evil. Amen.
V. Thou hast commanded Thy commandments, O Lord.
R. To be exactly observed.

R. Despise not the work of Thy hands.
V. O Lord, hear my prayer.
R. And let my cry come unto Thee.
V. The Lord be with you.
R. And with thy spirit.
Let us pray
Be present, O Lord, we beseech Thee, at the performance of our service: and since Thou didst vouchsafe to wash the feet of Thy disciples, despise not the work of Thy hands, which Thou hast commanded us to retain: that as here the outward stains are washed away by us and from us, so the inward sins of us all may be blotted out by Thee. Which do Thou vouchsafe to grant, who livest and reignest God for ever and ever.
R. Amen.

Offertory
The priest kisses the altar, and turning to the people says:
P. The Lord be with you.
S. And with thy spirit.
After saluting the people once more, the priest enters upon the Sacrifice of the Mass proper and urges the faithful to pray with him.
Let us pray.

Amen.
16
Then the priest reads the Offertory-verse, a short quotation from Holy Scripture which varies with the Mass of each day. This being finished, he offers the bread and wine, which, by virtue of the words of consecration, he is going to change into the adorable Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. He takes the paten with the host and offering it up, says:
Accept, O holy Father, almighty and eternal God, this unspotted host, which I, Thy unworthy servant, offer unto Thee, my living and true God, for my innumerable sins, offenses, and negligences, and for all here present: as also for all faithful Christians, both living and dead, that it may avail both me and them for salvation unto life everlasting. Amen.

Amen.
17
Making the Sign of the Cross with the paten, he places the host upon the corporal. He pours wine and water into the chalice, blessing the water before it is mixed. He pours a few drops of water into the chalice containing wine, in remembrance of the water and blood which flowed from the side of Jesus when pierced by the soldier's lance.
O God, who, in creating human nature, didst wonderfully dignify it, and still more wonderfully restore it, grant that, by the Mystery of this water and wine, we may be made partakers of His divine nature, who vouchsafed to be made partaker of our human nature, even Jesus Christ our Lord, Thy Son, who with Thee, liveth and reigneth in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God: world without end. Amen.

Amen.
Deinde facit signum crucis cum Calice, et illum ponit super Corporale, et Palla cooperit: tum, iunctis manibus super Altare, aliquantulum inclinatus, dicit:
In spíritu humilitátis et in ánimo contríto suscipiámur a te, Dómine: et sic fiat sacrifícium nostrum in conspéctu tuo hódie, ut pláceat tibi, Dómine Deus.
Erectus expandit manus, easque in altum porrectas iungens, elevátis ad coelum oculis et statim demissis, dicit:
Veni, sanctificátor omnípotens ætérne Deus: Benedicit Oblata, prosequendo: et bene  dic hoc sacrifícium, tuo sancto nómini præparátum.
18
Then the priest takes the chalice, and offers it, saying:
We offer unto Thee, O Lord, the chalice of salvation, beseeching Thy clemency, that it may ascend before Thy divine Majesty, as a sweet savor, for our salvation, and for that of the whole world. Amen.
The priest makes the Sign of the Cross with the chalice, places it upon the corporal, and covers it with the pall. Then, with his hands joined upon the Altar, and slightly bowing down, he says:
Accept us, O Lord, in the spirit of humility and contrition of heart, and grant that the sacrifice which we offer this day in Thy sight may be pleasing to Thee, O Lord God.
Raising his eyes towards heaven, extending and then joining his hands, the priest makes the Sign of the Cross over the host and the chalice, while he invokes the Holy Spirit.
Come, O almighty and eternal God, the Sanctifier, and bless  this Sacrifice, prepared for the glory of Thy holy Name.

Incensatio
Postea, si sollemniter celebrat, benedicit incensum, dicens:
Per intercessiónem beáti Michaélis Archángeli, stantis a dextris altáris incénsi, et ómnium electórum suórum, incénsum istud dignétur Dóminus bene  dícere, et in odórem suavitátis accípere. Per Christum, Dóminum nostrum. Amen.
Et, accepto thuribulo a Diacono, incensat Oblata, modo in Rubricis generalibus præscripto, dicens:
Incénsum istud a te benedíctum ascéndat ad te, Dómine: et descéndat super nos misericórdia tua.
Deinde incensat Altare, dicens:
Ps. 140, 2-4.
Dirigátur, Dómine, orátio mea, sicut incénsum, in conspéctu tuo: elevátio mánuum meárum sacrifícium vespertínum.
Dum reddit thuribulum Diacono, dicit:
Accéndat in nobis Dóminus ignem sui amóris, et flammam ætérnæ caritátis. Amen.
Postea incensatur Sacerdos a Diacono, deinde alii per ordinem.

Incense
At Solemn Masses, the priest now blesses incense, saying the following prayers:
May the Lord, by the intercession of blessed Michael the Archangel, who standeth at the right side of the altar of incense, and of all His Elect, vouchsafe to bless  this incense and receive it as an odor of sweetness: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Receiving the thurible from the deacon, the priest incenses the bread and the wine, while he says:
May this incense, which Thou hast blessed, O Lord, ascend to Thee, and may Thy mercy descend upon us.
Then he incenses the altar, saying:
Ps. 140, 2-4.
Let my prayer, O Lord, be directed as incense in Thy sight: the lifting up of my hands as an evening sacrifice.
Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth, and a door round about my lips. May my heart not incline to evil words, to make excuses for sins.
Giving the censor to the deacon, he says:
May the Lord enkindle within us the fire of His love, and the flame of everlasting charity. Amen.
The priest is then incensed by the deacon, who then incenses the others in order.

Ego autem in innocéntia mea ingréssus sum: rédime me et miserére mei. Pes meus stetit in dirécto: in ecclésiis benedícam te, Dómine.
20
The priest washes his fingers to symbolize the great purity and inner cleanliness of those who offer or participate in this great Sacrifice.
Psalm 25. 6-12
I will wash my hands among the innocent: and I will compass Thine altar, O Lord That I may hear the voice of praise: and tell of all Thy wonderous works. I have loved, O Lord, the beauty of Thy house and the place where Thy glory dwelleth. Take not away my soul, O God, with the wicked: nor my life with blood-thirsty men. In whose hands are iniquities, their right hand is filled with gifts. But I have walked in my innocence: redeem me, and have mercy on me. My foot hath stood in the direct way, in the churches I will bless Thee, O Lord.

Bowing down before the middle of the alter, the priest, with joined hands, says:
Receive, O holy Trinity, this oblation which we make to Thee, in memory of the Passion, Resurrection and Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ, and in honor of Blessed Mary, ever Virgin, blessed John the Baptist, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and of all the Saints, that it may avail unto their honor and our salvation, and may they vouchsafe to intercede for us in heaven, whose memory we celebrate on earth. The priest answers in a low voice:

Preface
The priest begins the preface, a call to render thanks to God the Father, through Jesus Christ, in union with all the heavenly spirits. The prayer of thanksgiving and praise varies with important Feasts. The priest begins the Preface, holding his hands over the altar:
P. The Lord be with you.
S. And with thy spirit.
P. Lift up your hearts.
S. We have lifted them up to the Lord.
P. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
S. It is meet and just.

Holy Cross
It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who didst establish the salvation of mankind on the tree of the Cross; that whence death came, thence also life might arise again, and that he, who overcame by the tree, by the tree also might be overcome: Through Christ our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominations worship it, the Powers stand in awe. The Heavens and the heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with these we entreat Thee that Thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted while we say with lowly praise:

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Sabaoth! Heaven and earth are full of Thy glory! Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is He that cometh in the Name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!

Deinde, in medio genuflexus, ter incensat Sacramentum. Ministri sacri, vel ministrantes, comitantur celebrantem, a dextris et a sinistris procedentes. Dum fit processio, cantatur hymnus Pange, lingua, gloriosi Corporis mysterium, usque ad verba Tantum ergo; si vero opus sit, idem hymnus repetitur.
Pange língua, gloriósi
Córporis mystérium,
Sanguinísque pretiósi,
Quem in mundi prétium
Fructus ventris generósi
Rex effúdit géntium.
Nobis datus, nobis natus
Ex intácta Vírgine,
Et in mundo conversátus,
Sparso verbi sémine.
Sui moras incolátus.
Miro clausit órdine.
In suprémæ nocte cœnæ
Recúmbens cum frátribus,
Observáta lege plene
Cibis in legálibus,
Cibum turbæ duodénæ
Se dat suis mánibus.
Verbum caro, panem verum
Verbo carnem éfficit;
Fitque sanguis Christi merum:
Novo cedat ritui:
Præstet fides supplémentum
Sénsuum deféctui.
Genitóri, Genitóque
Laus et iubilátio:
Salus, honor, virtus quoque
Sit et benedíctio
Procedénti ab utróque
Compar sit laudátio.
Amen.

Sing, my tongue, the Saviour's glory:
Of His Flesh the mystery sing;
Of His Blood all price exceeding.
Shed by our immortal King.
Destined for the world's redemption
From a noble womb to spring.
Of a pure and spotless Virgin,
Born for us on earth below,
He, as Man with man conversing,
Stayed the seeds of truth to sow,
Then He closed in solemn order
Wondrously His life of woe.
On the night of His last supper,
Seated with His chosen band,
He, the paschal victim eating,
First fulfills the Law's command;
Then as food to all His brethren
Gives himself with His own hand.
Word made Flesh, the bread of nature,
By His words to Flesh He turns;
Wine into His Blood He changes:
What though sense no change discerns,
Only be the heart in earnest,
Faith her lesson quickly learns.
Down in adoration falling,
Lo, the Sacred Host we hail,
Lo, o'er ancient forms departing
Newer rites of grace prevail;
Faith for all defects supplying,
Where the feeble senses fail.
To the everlasting Father
And the Son who reigns on high
With the Holy Ghost proceeding
Forth from each eternally,
Be salvation, honor, blessing,
Might and endless majesty.
Amen.
Deinde diaconus, vel ipse celebrans, reponit pyxidem in tabernaculo seu capsa.
Postea, omnes, genibus flexis, per aliquod temporis spatium in silentio Sacramentum adorant. Ps 21:19
Ant. Divisérunt sibi vestiménta mea: et super vestem meam misérunt sortem.
21:2 Deus, Deus meus, réspice in me: quare me dereliquísti? * longe a salúte mea verba delictórum meórum.
21:8 Omnes vidéntes me, derisérunt me: * locúti sunt lábiis, et movérunt caput.
21:9 Sperávit in Dómino, erípiat eum: * salvum fáciat eum, quóniam vult eum.
21:13 Circumdedérunt me vítuli multi: * tauri pingues obsedérunt me.
21:14 Aperuérunt super me os suum, * sicut leo rápiens et rúgiens.
21:17 Quóniam circumdedérunt me canes multi: * concílium malignántium obsédit me.
21:18 Fodérunt manus meas et pedes meos: * dinumeravérunt ómnia ossa mea.
21:19 Ipsi vero consideravérunt et inspexérunt me: * divisérunt sibi vestiménta mea, et super vestem meam misérunt sortem.
21:20 Tu autem, Dómine, ne elongáveris auxílium tuum a me: * ad defensiónem meam cónspice.
21:22 Salva me ex ore leónis: * et a córnibus unicórnium humilitátem meam.
21:23 Narrábo nomen tuum frátribus meis: * in médio ecclésiæ laudábo te.
21:26 Apud te laus mea in ecclésia magna: * vota mea reddam in conspéctu timéntium eum.
Ant. Divisérunt sibi vestiménta mea: et super vestem meam misérunt sortem.

Ps 21:19
Ant. They parted my garments amongst them; and upon my vesture they cast lots.
21:2 O God my God, look upon me: why hast thou forsaken me? * Far from my salvation are the words of my sins.
21:3 O my God, I shall cry by day, and thou wilt not hear: * and by night, and it shall not be reputed as folly in me.
21:4 But thou dwellest in the holy place, * the praise of Israel.
21:5 In thee have our fathers hoped: * they have hoped, and thou hast delivered them.
21:6 They cried to thee, and they were saved: * they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.
21:7 But I am a worm, and no man: * the reproach of men, and the outcast of the people.
21:8 All they that saw me have laughed me to scorn: * they have spoken with the lips, and wagged the head.
21:9 He hoped in the Lord, let him deliver him: * let him save him, seeing he delighteth in him.
21:10 For thou art he that hast drawn me out of the womb: * my hope from the breasts of my mother. I was cast upon thee from the womb.
21:11 From my mothers womb thou art my God, * depart not from me.
21:12 For tribulation is very near: * for there is none to help me.
21:13 Many calves have surrounded me: * fat bulls have besieged me.
21:14 They have opened their mouths against me, * as a lion ravening and roaring.
21:15 I am poured out like water; * and all my bones are scattered.
21:15 My heart is become like wax melting * in the midst of my bowels.
21:16 My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue hath cleaved to my jaws: * and thou hast brought me down into the dust of death.
21:17 For many dogs have encompassed me: * the council of the malignant hath besieged me.
21:18 They have dug my hands and feet. * They have numbered all my bones.
21:19 And they have looked and stared upon me. * They parted my garments amongst them; and upon my vesture they cast lots.
21:20 But thou, O Lord, remove not thy help to a distance from me; * look towards my defence.
21:21 Deliver, O God, my soul from the sword: * my only one from the hand of the dog.
21:22 Save me from the lions mouth; * and my lowness from the horns of the unicorns.
21:23 I will declare thy name to my brethren: * in the midst of the church will I praise thee.
21:24 Ye that fear the Lord, praise him: * all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him.
21:25 Let all the seed of Israel fear him: * because he hath not slighted nor despised the supplication of the poor man.
21:25 Neither hath he turned away his face from me: * and when I cried to him he heard me.
21:26 With thee is my praise in a great church: * I will pay my vows in the sight of them that fear him.
21:27 The poor shall eat and shall be filled: and they shall praise the Lord that seek him: * their hearts shall live for ever and ever.
21:28 All the ends of the earth * shall remember, and shall be converted to the Lord:
21:28 And all the kindreds of the Gentiles * shall adore in his sight.
21:29 For the kingdom is the Lords; * and he shall have dominion over the nations.
21:30 All the fat ones of the earth have eaten and have adored: * all they that go down to the earth shall fall before him.
21:31 And to him my soul shall live: * and my seed shall serve him.
21:32 There shall be declared to the Lord a generation to come: * and the heavens shall shew forth his justice to a people that shall be born, which the Lord hath made.
Ant. They parted my garments amongst them; and upon my vesture they cast lots.
